The Global Compact Network Philippines held its General Assembly (GA) on 07 March 2023 via Zoom. GCNP holds its GA every first Tuesday of March of each year as an opportunity for the participants of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) in the Philippines to gather and hear about its accomplishments for the previous year, financial health, and activities for the new year.
At the same time, the GA also holds the elections for the new members of the Board of Trustees. During this year’s GA, the participating companies voted for three members of the BOT. An online ballot for voting was sent to the attending companies. The results of the election revealed the winning nominees: Ms. Anna Margarita (Ginggay) Hontiveros Malvar (Aboitiz Equity Venures) and Mr. Dennis Montecillo (International Care Ministries) retained their seats and Ms. Anna Lagon (Bayo Manila) is the new trustee. The new Board of Trustees will hold a meeting a week after the GA and will elect their own officers.
New Members, Updates, Achievements of GCNP
The GA also featured presentations on the updates, achievements, and upcoming activities of the network. Ms. Ma. Victoria (Vickie) Tan, GCNP’s Chair of the Board of Trustees presented the key accomplishments of the GCNP for 2022, including the new participants who are: Converge Information and Communications Technology Solutions, Inc., Nordic Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, SGV & Co., Prestige Quality Paper, Tae Sung Philippines, PTC Holdings Corporation, D&L Industries and International Container Terminal Services, Inc.
The 2022 activities covered the implementation of the value proposition of the network which are: uniting members through the Private Sectors Champions (PSC) Initiative; building and strengthening relationships with other networks and organizations such continuously doing activities with UN agencies, international organizations, professional societies, and other local networks all over the world.
GCNP also proactively improved its value proposition by encouraging participating companies to join the UNGC Global Service offerings and to align with the UNGC strategy, specifically on harnessing the collective action of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). GCNP also held local major events and learning programs such as the 1st and 2nd SDG Awards, the 4th Sustainability Summit and programs such as webinars, accelerators, and other meetings.
GCNP also worked on increasing visibility and branding through knowledge-sharing, speaking invitations, online and social media presence, as well as the conduct of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Awards.
Mr. Octavio (Bobby) Peralta, GCNP’s Executive Director, presented the current financial standing of the network.
Ms. Yayu Javier, Vice Chairperson of the BOT, presented the planned activities for 2023, which included UNGC events such as the Private Sector Forum and Leaders’ Summit on September 2023, and the regional event, Uniting Business ASEAN. Furthermore, Ms. Javier updated the general assembly with the progress of the pilot projects for the Private Sector Champions, the SDG Awards, and the Sustainability Summit. Also highlighted in her presentation is the invitation for the members to utilize the UNGC Academy, to join accelerator trainings, and the other offerings of the UNGC. Ms. Javier also presented the upcoming local network activities such as the Sustainability Summit, SDG Awards, and the progress of the Private Sector Ambition. The three pillars and their projects are the following: The People Pillar: Agri-food systems transformation of MSME growers; Planet Pillar: on promoting circularity in MSME operations, and the Prosperity Pillar which will upscale Byaheng Digiskarte.
